The Power of a Positive Attitude

Life can change in a single moment. As many of you know, I was involved in an accident earlier this year. It changed my daily life in ways I could never have imagined. There were days when I felt frightened, frustrated, and unsure of what the future would hold; would I ever be able to walk again? I had to learn to do so many things differently, and sometimes even the smallest tasks, like getting into my wheelchair from my bed to go down for breakfast or lifting my toes off the floor for the physiotherapist, felt nearly impossible, like climbing the steepest mountain without shoes.

But through every challenge, I discovered something very important: a positive attitude is one of the greatest strengths we have. I couldn't change what had happened to me, or unbreak my legs, but I could choose how I acted and responded to my circumstances. Every smile and ‘Get Well Soon’ card from my students, every achievement – irrespective of how small, and every kind word from my family, friends and fellow teachers, helped me take another step forward.

As a teacher, I want everyone to remember that life will not always be easy. There will be times when you find schoolwork difficult, fall out with a friend, lose a football match, have to make an impossible decision, or face a challenge that seems impossible. When those moments come, please don't give up. Believe in yourself, ask for help when you need it, and keep trying. I can honestly tell you that progress is often made one small step at a time.

Recovering from my accident and accepting that I couldn’t change my injuries, has taught me that strength is not about never falling down or being beaten by life and its curved balls. True strength is finding the courage to get back up, even when it feels difficult. Every challenge we overcome makes us a little stronger, a little wiser, and a lot more grateful.

So, remember this whenever you are having a difficult day: believe in yourself and tell yourself that you CAN DO IT! I went from having 2 broken ankles in a wheelchair, not being allowed to put my feet on the ground for 8 weeks, to running a Park Run within 6 months. I did this by making the decision to be positive and focused every day!

You will always be stronger than you think you are and braver than you believe yourself to be. You are absolutely capable of achieving wonderful things, one step at a time.
